FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Glastonbury Town Council, alongside Mohammed Saddiq, Lord-Lieutenant of Somerset and Ted Allen, Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Somerset, will commemorate the 80th Anniversary of D-Day this Thursday, the 6th of June, with an all day programme featuring Mayor Lokabandhu, Pilot Philip Beckinsale, Glastonbury’s faith leaders and local school children. All townspeople and visitors are invited to join in the celebrations.
ITINERARY
08:00-08:15 ‘D-Day 80 Proclamation’ – Glastonbury Town Crier David Greenway will publicly announce the ‘D-Day 80 Proclamation’ at the Market Cross to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of the D-Day landings accompanied by Glastonbury’s Civic Bagpiper Craig MacFarlane.
09:00-09:30 ‘Prayers for Peace’ – The Mayor of Glastonbury and Glastonbury’s faith leaders will gather to observe ‘Prayers for Peace’ to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of D-Day. The Town Hall will fly the D-Day 80 Flag.
11:00-11:30 ‘D-Day Heroes’ – Children from Glastonbury’s schools will read out a poem specially written by Chelsea Pensioner Roy Palmer – Herald of the Royal Hospital – to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of D-Day.
11:30-18:00 ‘Model Aircraft Display’ – Philip Beckinsale, Acting Pilot Officer No: 914 (Glastonbury & Street) Squadron, will be showing a model aircraft display in St. John’s Church, including aircraft linked directly with D-Day, plus a large selection of US, RAF, Luftwaffe, and dioramas of V1 & V2 rocket launch site models.
16:30-18:00 ‘National Fish and Chip Day Extravaganza!’ – Joining local Veterans in the Market Place to eat the nation’s favourite ‘take away’, the Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Somerset, Ted Allen, will give a commemorative address and Glastonbury Brass will play music from the 1940s. Many thanks to Knights Fish and Chips for their generosity.
18:30 ‘Ringing Out for Peace’ – The bell-ringers of St John’s will join Churches from around the UK in to observe the 80th Anniversary of D-Day.
21:00-21:45 ‘Beacon Lighting at the Tor!’ –Join us on the summit of Glastonbury Tor, where the D-Day 80 Beacon will be lit at 9:15 pm by Prebendary David MacGeoch, Vicar of Glastonbury, following a formal Tribute read by Mohammed Saddiq, Lord-Lieutenant of Somerset.
